Early Pregnancy Scan

What is an Early Pregnancy Scan?

An Early Pregnancy Scan (also called Viability or Dating Scan) is a safe ultrasound examination performed between 6 and 10 weeks of gestation. It confirms the presence of a viable intrauterine pregnancy, estimates the gestational age, and checks for multiple pregnancies.

Why is it done?

When should I get it done?

The recommended window for an early pregnancy scan is between 6 weeks and 10 weeks + 6 days of pregnancy. Scanning before 6 weeks may not clearly show fetal structures, and after 10 weeks a detailed structural scan is preferred.
